Morocco and France Propose Global Initiative to Cut Building Emissions at COP27

On the occasion of the UN climate conference (COP 27) currently taking place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, Morocco and France have launched a call for the creation of an agenda called "Buildings Breakthrough", aimed at carrying out the energy transition in the building sector by 2030.
Responsible for 37% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the building sector has significant room for improvement, but no commitment has been made so far in the fight against climate change, Moroccan and French experts have stressed.
To remedy this, France and Morocco have called for the establishment of a "Buildings Breakthrough" in order to create new momentum between governments. The idea has already received the agreement of more than 30 countries and 12 have already pledged their support for this initiative, which sets the goal of zero emissions by 2030 for the building sector.
To achieve the objectives set by this mechanism, France plans to put in place common commitments, recommendations and a system for evaluating progress as of 2023. The French authorities have also expressed their intention to bring together construction ministers from around the world to associate them with this call and record concrete progress.
