Mohammed VI and Emmanuel Macron: Turning the Page on Tensions

Relations between Morocco and France have experienced strong tensions in recent years for various reasons, including the rapprochement with Algeria, Morocco’s neighboring rival, and Paris’s reluctance to recognize the Moroccanness of the Sahara, as already done by the United States, Spain, Israel and Germany. Today, the power of Emmanuel Macron is working to turn the page on tensions.
"France and Morocco share a common destiny," and are called upon to jointly meet the multiple challenges of economic integration, competitiveness and shared prosperity, said Christophe Lecourtier, the French Ambassador to Morocco, during the inaugural conference "Les jeudis diplomatiques," organized by the Faculty of Legal, Economic and Social Sciences-Rabat Agdal, on the theme "France-Morocco relations: issues and prospects." He noted that the two countries are "at an important moment" in their relationship. "We are living in a world that has changed a lot and that requires us to redefine our relationship by taking a step back and looking around us to meet together the multiple challenges that lie ahead of us," he added.
According to the French diplomat, it is necessary to "rebuild" the France-Morocco relationship around the human asset, the strength of human relations, because "we have a lot in common." And to complete: in the context of "the new globalization, we have no other choice but to continue to build a community of destiny. I am really convinced that for Europe and for France in particular, there is no other option than to be able to build around Morocco, with the vision carried" by King Mohammed VI "this Euro-African ensemble as integrated as possible." Advancing that the other aspect of the cooperation between Rabat and Paris is economic prosperity, Lecourtier recalled that "the competitiveness of France now largely depends on its investments established in Morocco, no longer in a subcontracting logic but in a co-contracting logic."
The French ambassador did not fail to highlight Morocco’s assets. "What Morocco offers in terms of infrastructure, stability, quality of the men and women who live there, the potential of its energy resources and geographical proximity is a winning equation. And there are no others today," said the French ambassador, welcoming a dynamic of a relationship that carries great designs that will need to be strengthened in the future "for the happiness and shared prosperity of our peoples."
