Morocco and Algeria See Sharp Decline in Arms Imports, SIPRI Report Reveals

Arms imports have fallen by 20% for Morocco and 58% for Algeria, over the period between 2013-2017 and 2018-2022. This is revealed in a new report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), published on Monday.
This document on global military spending in 2022 notes a decline in arms imports by Morocco (20%) and Algeria (58%), the two largest importers in the region, which has led to a 40% drop in major arms imports by African states. Despite this decline in arms imports, Morocco and Algeria continue to be among the countries with the highest military budgets in Africa, the report says.
Morocco ranks 29th in the Top 40 of the largest importers of major arms and their main suppliers between 2018 and 2022, with 0.8% of global arms imports during the period, compared to 1.1% for the 2013-2017 period. With a 76% share, the United States remained Morocco’s top arms supplier, followed by France (15%) and China (6.8%).
