Morocco Allows Return of 280 Wives of ISIS Fighters Without Prosecution

Moroccan women whose husbands are jihadists who fought for Daesh in Syria and Iraq will not be prosecuted by the justice system. They will therefore be able to return to the country without fear of legal troubles. This decision by Morocco was confirmed by Abdelhak Khiame, Director of the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ), on Monday, October 28.

There are a total of 280 women, Moroccan wives of jihadists who were on the front lines for Daesh, in Syria and Iraq. The Moroccan justice system has ruled on the case of these mothers, reports Le360.

Indeed, details were provided on the fate to be reserved for these women, during a press conference held last Monday in Rabat, on the dismantling of a terrorist cell that had set up its headquarters in Tamaris II, in the southern suburbs of Casablanca.

According to Abdelhak Khiame, Director of the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ), these women should not fear for their freedom. "We will not prosecute them judicially after their return, simply because they did not fight. They had joined their Moroccan husband there for purely family reasons," he noted.

While the total number of children born to these Moroccan wives is estimated at around "391, the judicial authorities of the Kingdom claim to have counted a total of "1,659 Moroccan jihadists who fought for Daesh in recent years".

According to Abdelhak Khiame, among these jihadists, "1,060 were active combatants on the ground and 742 of them were killed on the front (657 in Syria and 85 in Iraq), while 260 managed to return to Morocco.
