Morocco-Algeria: Exceptional Border Opening
The border between Morocco and Algeria was exceptionally opened. This coordinated operation enabled the return of 56 Moroccan nationals in irregular situations, supported by a migrant aid association.
The transfer took place at the Colonel Lotfi border post, commonly called "Jouj Bghal". Algerian authorities handed over a group composed exclusively of men, arrested for attempted illegal migration or for staying without legal status. According to the Moroccan Association for Aid to Migrants in Vulnerable Situations, this is the fourth operation of this kind since the beginning of the year. These repatriated individuals come from various cities in the kingdom, such as Oujda, Nador, Fès, Salé and Kénitra.

Relatives of the nationals had gathered near the crossing point to welcome them. The association, which had helped these families gather the necessary identity documents to resolve the situation, is now committed to supporting these men in their administrative and social reintegration. Alongside this operation, the organization is currently managing over 500 cases of Moroccans abroad, including 120 individuals facing expulsion or held in administrative detention.

Reports are multiplying daily. The NGO recently identified around sixty additional detainees and is monitoring cases where initial prison sentences exceed ten years. The association is also continuing its search to locate missing persons in Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, defending families’ right to know their fate. Finally, it is campaigning for the return of remains blocked in foreign morgues to allow relatives to perform funeral rites, while commending the cooperation of families and local media in this fight against the exploitation of undocumented migrants.
