Morocco’s Airport Traffic Plummets 68% in January Amid Border Closures

The closure of borders has plunged Moroccan airports into disarray. In January 2021, they welcomed 638,806 passengers, a decrease of 68.39% compared to January 2020, according to data published by the National Airports Authority (ONDA).
The decline recorded by the airports concerns all markets, particularly Europe (around 70% of international air traffic), which recorded a decrease of 69.91%. Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca, which alone accounts for more than 47% of total traffic, welcomed 305,891 passengers, a decrease of 64.09%, while Marrakech Menara Airport welcomed 68,346 passengers (−86.61%) and Agadir Al Massira Airport recorded 34,530 passengers (−78.45%).
In its press release, the Office also mentions a 58.07% drop in aircraft movements, which fell to 7,392 in January. It should be noted that Mohammed V Airport accounted for 43.94% of the movements, Marrakech Menara (21.83%) and Agadir Al Massira (7.82%). As for air freight, it recorded a decline of 35.62% and thus reached 5,213.03 tons in January 2021 compared to 8,097.45 tons in January 2020.
