Morocco Aims to Boost Tourism with Focus on Medical Travel Market

Awaiting the arrival of foreign tourists, Morocco wants to focus on medical tourism. It represents a potential of 300,000 additional arrivals in the kingdom, says Imad Barrakad, chairman of the board of the Moroccan Tourist Engineering Company (SMIT).
In a statement to the MAP, he indicated that this type of medical tourism represents a very promising opportunity given the comparative and competitive advantages. For the president of SMIT, the development of this niche depends on the establishment of an appropriate medical offer, the emergence of specialized agencies for the distribution and promotion of this type of product. It also takes into account the review of the regulatory framework governing this activity in order to better meet the needs of consumers, service providers and investors in this segment, he specifies.
According to Mr. Barrakad, Law 113-13 authorizing the opening of the capital of private clinics to non-medical investors, passed in February 2015, is a major achievement for investment in medical tourism. In order to further boost the sector, he calls for the establishment of an ecosystem (status of doctors, incentives, professional operators organizing this activity, legal arsenal, etc.).
In the expert’s opinion, this ecosystem should position Morocco as a medical tourism destination with real competitive advantages, just like its main competitors such as Tunisia, Thailand, Turkey, Mexico, Egypt, Argentina, Malaysia and Lebanon.
