Morocco Aims to Boost Mountain Tourism, Targeting 500,000 Annual Visitors

Mountain tourism in Morocco is a sector with strong potential that is underexploited, according to Nadia Fettah Alaoui, the Moroccan Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts, Air Transport and Social Economy.
Mountain tourism is a strategic opportunity for the sustainable development of mountain regions, said Nadia Fettah Alaoui, during a meeting with industry players in Oukaimeden, stating that this sector can attract up to 500,000 tourists per year, 80% of whom are Moroccans. Morocco has several mountain destinations known for their natural beauty and cultural diversity, such as the Atlas, the Rif or the Toubkal massif.
To strengthen the attractiveness and exploit the potential of these areas that are home to nearly 20% of the Moroccan population and cover more than 40% of the national territory, the minister announced the implementation of a "Mountain" label to highlight the tourist products and services of mountain areas, as well as the creation of a specific investment fund for mountain tourism to support structuring and innovative projects in this field. The fund will have a budget of 200 million dirhams, she specifies.
Also, the legal and tax framework applicable to mountain tourism will be put in place in order to simplify administrative procedures and attract private investment in the sector, Nadia Fettah Alaoui added, also announcing the realization of targeted communication campaigns, awareness-raising and training actions for professionals and local populations, participation in specialized fairs and events to promote mountain tourism.
The minister also plans to develop the necessary infrastructure and equipment to welcome mountain tourists (roads, trails, ski lifts, accommodation, interpretation centers, etc.) in order to diversify the tourist offer in the mountains and offer activities adapted to the seasons and profiles of the clientele (hiking, skiing, mountain biking, rafting, tree climbing, etc.). Nadia Fettah Alaoui called for the mobilization of all stakeholders to make mountain tourism a lever for local and regional development, creating wealth and jobs.
