Morocco Agrees to Raise Civil Servant Salaries by 1,000 Dirhams

The Moroccan government and the unions are said to have reached an agreement regarding the general salary increase for civil servants.

Good news is in store for Moroccan civil servants. On Tuesday, the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, received a delegation from the Moroccan Labor Union (UMT) led by its Secretary General, Miloudi Moukharik, as part of the social dialogue. The two parties are said to have agreed on a general salary increase of 1,000 dirhams, according to sources at the newspaper Al3omk, adding that this increase should be accompanied by a reduction of 150 to 400 dirhams in income tax.

Civil servants on scale 9 and above would be affected by this increase, to the detriment of the lower-category agents, who are more numerous, the same sources specify, announcing the validation of these proposals by the government by next Tuesday. As for the salary increase, its implementation should take place in two stages: the first in July next year and the second in 2025, detail the same sources.

The government and the unions are also said to have reached an agreement on the law on strikes, which should allow the modification of this text, particularly regarding its general principles. The new version will be presented during the parliamentary session in October. Similarly, the two parties are discussing the reform of the pension funds with a view to reviewing its general principles and raising the retirement age to 63.

Although on the agenda of the session, the issue of the revision of the Labor Code has been postponed sine die, to allow the parties to agree on the points to be modified. For their part, civil servants warn union leaders against any form of concessions with the government, noting that the proposed 1,000 dirhams could prove insignificant in a context of inflation and continuous price increases for several products.
