US-Morocco ’African Lion’ Military Exercise Kicks Off with NATO Allies

The combined Moroccan-American exercise African Lion 2021 will take place from June 7 to 18 in several regions of Morocco, including the Mehbes region in the Sahara, with the participation of thousands of military personnel from many countries and a very large amount of land, air and naval equipment.
It is a press release from the General Staff of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR) that provided the details of the operation.
It is noted that on the instructions of King Mohammed VI, Supreme Commander and Chief of Staff of the FAR, this 17th edition of the exercise will see the participation, in addition to the United States and Morocco, of several countries: Great Britain, Brazil, Canada, Tunisia, Senegal, Netherlands, Italy as well as NATO, in addition to military observers from about thirty countries representing Africa, Europe and America.
Considered one of the most important allied exercises in the world, African Lion 2021 aims to strengthen the maneuvering capabilities of the participating units, consolidate their interoperability in planning and conducting joint operations within the framework of a coalition, the statement said.

Similarly, the Moroccan-American exercise also aims to develop cyber defense skills, train for the conduct of air combat, support and air-to-air refueling operations, consolidate cooperation in the field of maritime security, carry out humanitarian activities...
As a multinational joint exercise, organized and led jointly by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, African Lion 2021 will also include training and simulations on command activities and training on operations to combat violent extremist organizations, the source said.
