Morocco Advances Plans for 60km Casablanca-Rabat Highway to Ease Traffic Congestion

The Moroccan government is working to realize the continental highway project to connect Casablanca to Rabat over 60 km and alleviate the foreseeable congestion of the main highway.

The Ministry of the Interior has decided to open public impact surveys in Cherrat, Aïn Tizgha, Fedalate, Bouznika, Chellalat, Beni Yakhlef, Sidi Moussa Ben Ali and Sidi Moussa El Mejdoub starting January 22, reports Maghreb-Intelligence. These rural and urban municipalities are located between Rabat and Casablanca. The surveys will last 20 days. According to the forecasts of Autoroutes du Maroc (ADM), the total estimated cost of the project amounts to 5 billion dirhams, with a preliminary schedule of 4 years of work from 2023 to 2026.

The realization of the new 60 km highway should therefore be effective in 2026, well before the co-organization by Morocco, Spain and Portugal of the 2030 World Cup. It will not only support the main one saturated by traffic, but it will also serve the new large stadium in Casablanca to be built in the municipality of Benslimane near the military airport.
