Morocco Adopts Chloroquine for COVID-19 Treatment, Citing Long-Term Use

At a time when theses are clashing on the effectiveness of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, the Moroccan Ministry of Health confirmed on Wednesday that the decision to use these two drugs to treat people infected with the coronavirus is a "sovereign decision" taken in agreement with the Technical and Scientific Committee of the National Program for the Prevention and Control of Acute Respiratory Diseases.

The Ministry of Health stated that this drug, which is used all over the world to curb the disease, has proven its worth. The department adds that "this drug has been known to doctors for years, as it is used in the treatment of chronic diseases, such as arthritis and other immune diseases".

The Director of Medicines at the Ministry of Health, Bouchra Meddah, confirmed that "the ministry has taken all precautions to provide this drug", while stressing that "Morocco currently has a locally manufactured stock and another imported from abroad". According to her, the drug is intended for the treatment of coronavirus in Morocco, and is distributed, as such, in all hospital centers and regional and provincial hospitals. She also stated that "all Moroccans suffering from chronic diseases who used these drugs will be able to obtain them free of charge, exceptionally in the regional pharmacies of the Ministry of Health, after presenting a medical file and a prescription".

The document issued by the Minister of Health underlines the good management of the national stock of this drug by the officials of the restoration and pharmacy in the regional health services.
