Morocco to Adopt Amazigh New Year as National Holiday, Minister Announces

The Minister of State, in charge of Human Rights and Relations with Parliament, has just announced the imminent adoption of January 13 as a national, non-working and paid holiday, to celebrate the Amazigh New Year.
During the oral question session held on Monday at the House of Representatives, Mustapha Ramid stated that the Berber New Year is a priority for all the components of the Moroccan Government.
A decision will be made at the right time, given the importance that the Berber language is taking on, he specified. "You are better placed to understand... This issue should be confirmed by the person with the powers to announce the main events of the country," he added.
In a memorandum addressed to the Head of Government, activists had asked for the recognition of the Amazigh New Year’s Day as an official national holiday.
