Morocco Acquires Advanced Engines for 24 Apache Attack Helicopters

Turboprops have recently been acquired by Morocco to equip the 24 Apache (AH-64E) helicopters. The T700 from General Electric will be able to propel the attack helicopter models produced by the American aerospace giant Boeing.

The Moroccan army is further strengthening its military arsenal. The government is also devoting a significant budget to it. In a recent contract announcement for 24 Apache helicopters, Helihub revealed that Morocco has chosen 48 T700-701D engines and two spare parts.

Five years ago, the American giant Boeing had signed a delivery contract with Morocco for 24 AH-64E Apaches, as part of the FMS [Foreign Military Sales] system. According to the same source, a recommendation from the US agency responsible for the export of American military equipment (Defense Security Cooperation Agency - DSCA) had allowed the acquisition in November 2019 of 36 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters in Morocco, for a potential amount of $4.25 billion.

Thanks to this significant disbursement, Morocco had also purchased 79 T700-GE-701D engines, 36 AN/ASQ-170 target acquisition sensors, night vision systems, self-protection devices and more than 600 Hellfire air-to-ground missiles.

According to Boeing experts, this range of T700/CT7 turboprops equips 15 types of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft with more than 130 customers in over 50 countries. To date, more than 20,000 units have already been delivered and this type of engine has accumulated over 100 million flight hours, and the kingdom is the 17th country to acquire the AH-64E Apache.
