Morocco to Acquire 100 Locally-Made Trains, Boosting Rail Coverage to 87% by 2040

The National Railway Office (ONCF) announced the gradual acquisition of 100 new trains manufactured locally, and this over the next 10 years.
The ONCF intends to bring the rail service coverage rate in Morocco to 87% by 2040. This project is part of the strengthening of the company’s fleet which, according to its CEO, Mohamed Rabie Khlie, needs "50 trains to replace the amortized rail units, 25 trains to meet the growth in passenger transport demand, as well as 5 additional trains for maintenance needs".
The new trains will be delivered in 2025, he specified. And to achieve this, the office will launch a call for expressions of interest during the first half of 2023. "The bet for us is to reduce the manufacturing cost and move towards a fleet of locally produced trains," he said.
