Morocco Abstains from UN Vote on Russia’s Human Rights Council Suspension

Morocco still maintains its position of neutrality at the UN in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. On Thursday, the kingdom was absent from the vote that suspended Russia’s membership in the UN Human Rights Council.
In this vote, 93 UN members voted in favor of the resolution to suspend Russia’s membership in the Human Rights Council, against 24 and 58 nations abstained and 18 did not participate in the vote.
This is the third time that Morocco has chosen neutrality on a resolution concerning the Russia-Ukraine war, in line with the kingdom’s non-interference approach to the conflict.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had specified that "the Kingdom of Morocco has always worked to promote the non-use of force for the settlement of disputes between States. It calls for the continuation and intensification of dialogue and negotiation between the parties to end this conflict and encourages all initiatives and actions to this end".
Among the countries that voted against the decision are China, Iran, Syria, Algeria, Kazakhstan and Cuba, including Belarus and Russia itself.
