Morocco: 3,600 Workers Laid Off During Pandemic Return to Jobs, Labor Minister Reports

The Minister of Labor and Professional Integration spoke before the House of Representatives on the social repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic on the employment sector. Mohamed Amekraz said that the 3,610 civil servants who were laid off during the first 9 months of 2020 have returned to their jobs.

The Covid-19 pandemic has severely tested the world of work and employment. But these dark detours through which thousands of Moroccan workers have passed seem to be conjugated in the past. The Minister of Labor stressed that these workers have regained their jobs, but he also spoke about the handling of 47,916 individual disputes, compared to 38,672 disputes during the same period in 2019. There were also the resolution of 53,356 complaints out of a total of 109,415. "The interventions of the labor inspectors made it possible, during the first 9 months of 2020, to avoid a total of 1,218 strikes at 744 establishments, which employ nearly 89,797 employees".

During the first 9 months of the year, 5,293 employees out of 10,300 took part in 85 strikes in 68 establishments. Regarding field control, the minister specified that "the services under the ministry continued the ordinary visits carried out in accordance with the laws in force, stating that the number of visits made by the labor inspectors during the first 9 months of 2020 reached some 16,362, which gave rise to 284,631 observations to employees who violated the provisions of social legislation".

As for the number of employees declared to the National Social Security Fund (CNSS), it reached 2.47 million, for the month of September 2020, according to the minister, who thus underlines the gradual resumption of national economic activity.
