Morocco’s 2022 Budget Sparks Debate on Support for Overseas Citizens

The Council of Government addressed the issue of Moroccans Residing Abroad (MREs). Before the members of the Finance Committee of the First Chamber, Fouzi Lekjaa, the Delegate Minister in charge of the Budget, revealed the share devoted to this issue in the 2022 Finance Bill (PLF).
On Friday, Fouzi Lekjaa responded to the concerns of the deputies, particularly those of the opposition, who felt that the issue of Moroccans Residing Abroad (MREs) had not been sufficiently addressed in the context of the 2022 PLF. They also mentioned the problems posed by the multitude of stakeholders managing issues related to Moroccans of the world. In response, the Delegate Minister in charge of the Budget stated that the presentation note of the 2022 PLF did not devote only 4 lines to the issue of MREs, but rather 4 billion dirhams.
Regarding the multitude of stakeholders, he indicated that each institution plays a different role within the framework of a convergence of efforts and policies. According to his explanations, the Mohammed V Foundation is responsible for the organization and coordination of the Marhaba operation. The Hassan II Foundation plays an important role in anchoring Moroccan culture. The Delegate Ministry has the task of finding the necessary solutions to all the problems that MREs may encounter.
