Moroccans Lead in Belgian Citizenship Acquisitions, New Data Shows

Moroccans are at the top of the list of foreign nationals naturalized as Belgian citizens in 2021. This emerges from the figures communicated on the Statbel website, the Belgian statistical office.
In 2021, 39,275 people changed nationality in Belgium. There are 39,233 foreign nationals who have obtained Belgian nationality. Moroccans are at the top of the top 5 nationalities of origin of citizens who have acquired Belgian nationality. Their number reached 3,698. They are followed by Syrians (3,385), Romanians (1,968) and Iraqis (1,891). Afghans (1,460) close the podium.
Compared to 2020, the number of Moroccans who obtained Belgian nationality decreased by 1.5%. This number stands at 3,756. Statbel also specifies that 42 people were deprived of their Belgian nationality last year.
