Moroccan Youth Face Charges for Breaking Ramadan Fast in Public

The police arrested five young people, including two girls, who were smoking in broad daylight and in public in Marrakech. They are accused of violating Ramadan and confinement.
After their arrest, these five young people, residing in the El Mellah district in the old medina of Marrakech, were placed in police custody at the 16th police station, reports Al Massae. They will be brought before the judge in charge of flagrante delicto cases at the court of first instance in Marrakech. Their trial will be held remotely due to the health crisis related to Covid-19.
The accused will be prosecuted under Article 222 of the Moroccan Penal Code. This article stipulates that any individual, known for his belonging to Islam and ostentatiously breaking the fast in a public place during Ramadan, is liable to imprisonment from one to six months and a fine. They will also be prosecuted for violating the confinement imposed by the authorities to curb the spread of the coronavirus in the kingdom.
