Moroccan Youth Dissatisfied: 68% Consider Emigration, Study Finds

A large majority of young Moroccans are not or are little satisfied with their lives, and 68.2% of them are tempted by emigration.
In its report entitled "Being a Young Person in Morocco Today", presented last Tuesday, the National Observatory for Human Development (ONDH) revealed that 83.3% of young Moroccans (15-29 years old) are not or little satisfied with their lives, 71.3% with their housing conditions and 81.6% with their work.
According to these data, the Moroccan youth participate weakly in the creation of wealth and the development of the country. This trend is attributable to the weakness of the active population, the activity rate which was only 35.1% in 2019, the large part of them suffering from unemployment, underemployment and informal work.
As a result, the downward trend in the activity rate of young Moroccans could lead to a loss of wealth creation, a depreciation of their knowledge and skills and the emergence of risky behaviors complicating their economic and social integration, warns the ONDH.
In parallel, nearly 70% of young people are tempted by emigration, although 67% of them say they cannot be happy without their family. Few mention the role of school in the transmission of values (only 33.4%), while 93% consider religion to be an important dimension of their identity.
