Moroccan Wool Dyer’s Harsh Working Conditions Captured in Award-Winning Photo

National Geographic Traveller (UK) has just awarded the 2019 prize for best photography, in the "people" category, to Justin Cliffe for a photo showing, in Marrakech, a man working in almost untenable conditions.
"A fabric shop owner in Marrakech showed us this almost apocalyptic scene of a worker dyeing wool - it was dirty, hot and a pungent smell filled the air," is the description of the photograph given by the one who took it, Justin Cliffe.
For his part, a jury member named Ben Rowe states: "Life in the midst of heat and dirt, a daily workplace for someone. The glow around the solitary silhouette, a ray of light in the midst of the dirt." It is easier to understand why it won an award in the "people" category.
On Instagram, Justin Cliffe said about this victory: "Very happy and surprised to have won the People category of the National Geographic UK photography competition with this image, taken in the depths of the Marrakech souk."
This annual competition was launched by National Geographic Traveller in 2011 to reward the best British travel photography talent in five categories: Cities, Nature, People, Food and Portfolio.
