Moroccan Women’s Rights Pioneer Aicha Chenna Dies at 81

Sad news this Sunday, September 25th. Morocco has just lost one of the most active advocates for the cause of women and children, and a highly respected figure among Moroccans: Aicha Chenna.
This tireless activist died this Sunday at the age of 81, according to sources close to her family. She had dedicated her entire life to defending single mothers and especially abandoned children.
Orphaned of her father, she had first embarked on nursing studies before devoting herself to health education. In the 1980s, she created the Association Solidarité Féminine to help abandoned children and their mothers. But her activism dates back about sixty years.
In 2017, she had called on the Ministry of National Education to introduce sex education courses in Moroccan schools. "I would like the new government to integrate sex education courses in schools for young Moroccans," she had said, lamenting that Moroccan society was "intolerant towards single women," while acknowledging that attitudes were slowly changing.
