Moroccan Women Boost Spanish Berry Harvest in Successful Seasonal Migration Program

The 2018-2019 agricultural campaign for the strawberry and berry harvest, in the province of Huelva, Spain, has ended with a positive outcome. The Spanish and Moroccan governments state that the displacement of more than 10,000 Moroccans is a positive aspect for the said campaign.
At the time of the assessment, satisfaction is on the agenda. "The two governments agree that the displacement of 14,583 Moroccan nationals, as part of a regular, orderly and safe migration process, has been positive for the countries of origin and destination, but above all for the people who participate in this circular migration campaign," says a joint statement.
The agricultural campaign in the province of Huelva is a very important factor in economic development and employment, where 5 million days of work have been declared and for which social security affiliation, in May 2019, recorded an average of 91,291 registrations in the special agricultural scheme, the same statement said. In total, Spanish workers accounted for 42,979, community workers 21,894, and non-EU workers 26,418.
With a view to bringing further improvements in the monitoring and control of the working and living conditions of the displaced persons, the two governments intend to define other strategies that would be more operational. This willingness follows the multiple complaints of sexual harassment filed by a group of Moroccan workers.
