Moroccan Woman Recounts Harrowing Ordeal of Detention in Myanmar Border Region

Moroccans detained by armed criminal gangs in Myanmar (Burma) are suffering violence and threats. Here is the testimony of a former victim.

A young Moroccan woman who participated in a demonstration of the families of detainees in Myanmar (Burma) in Rabat on Thursday, confided to Alyaoum24 that she had also been detained for three months in this border region with Thailand. The young woman, who requested anonymity, recounts having traveled last November from Morocco to Thailand, via Turkey and Malaysia, before being transported by car to the Myanmar region. A crossing that lasted a good six hours.

The Moroccan says she made this long journey after a Moroccan intermediary offered her an attractive work contract of around $4,000 in e-commerce in Thailand and bought her plane tickets. But once on site, she was confronted with a harsh reality. "I was shocked when I discovered that I was in Myanmar," she assures, specifying that she was handed over to armed men who forced her to work in the field of electronic fraud, like many other young people.

The young woman confides that she obtained her release after photographing the marks of torture on her body and sending the photos to her parents in Morocco. They contacted a human rights organization that worked for her release with the collaboration of the military forces. It should be recalled that nearly 150 Moroccans are still detained in Myanmar. The Casablanca prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into this case. It is being conducted by the National Judicial Police Bureau (BNPJ).
