Moroccan Weather Service Warns of Spillover Effects from Spanish Storm System

The atmospheric depression "DANA" which caused heavy rainfall as well as storms and strong winds in southeastern Spain during the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, is also affecting Morocco, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).

"In this region, a warm and humid air mass from the Mediterranean has collided with cold air in the upper layers. This difference in temperature and humidity has favored the formation of ascending currents and heavy rainfall," the DGM said in a notice, adding that this presence of warm air masses in the Mediterranean basin "has led to heavy rains and floods".

According to the DGM, this depression affecting southeastern Spain is also affecting Morocco "from time to time", causing "dense clouds accompanied by rain or thunderstorms, particularly in the northern and central regions, as well as in the Atlas, Rif and some eastern areas of the country. The Middle Atlas and High Atlas mountains have also experienced snowfall".

"The impact of this depression has been less intense in Morocco compared to southeastern Spain, but it has nevertheless caused significant rainfall on Tuesday, reaching 100 mm in Tanger-Med and 84 mm in Fnideq," the institution said, announcing "relatively cold weather on Thursday, with a risk of local frost in the Atlas regions and the eastern high plateaus", as well as "relatively strong gusts of wind on the northern coasts".

During the day on Friday, "this disturbance will gradually dissipate and its effects will become minimal, although scattered residual rains will persist in the morning on the Mediterranean coast, the Atlas ranges and the northern and central Atlantic coasts. It will be cold on the reliefs and high plateaus," the DGM warns.
