Moroccan Vegetable Prices Plummet as Exports to Mauritania Halt

The prices of the most consumed vegetables such as tomatoes, potatoes and onions have dropped significantly this week in the souks and weekly markets. Here is the reason.
The price of tomatoes, for example, has recorded a significant drop, from 15 dirhams to 6 dirhams per kilo. The price of potatoes has gone from 10 dirhams to 4 or even 3 dirhams per kilo.
According to the farmers, this sharp drop is due to the halt of vegetable exports to Mauritania due to the increase in customs duties and taxes by the authorities of this country, in reaction to the decision of Moroccan exporters to reduce the quantities exported in order to curb inflation and support the purchasing power of Moroccan consumers.
In addition to the drop in prices, it is also noted that there is sufficient availability of good quality vegetables in all Moroccan cities.
