Moroccan Universities Lag Behind in Africa's Top 100 Rankings, Study Finds

Moroccan higher education is doing poorly. This is what the specialized directory Unirank reveals, which ranks Moroccan universities among the least brilliant on the continent, despite the reforms that are being carried out there and which rather have the appearance of a scattering.

According to the specialized directory Unirank, Morocco was only able to place 4 of its campuses in the Top-100 of the best universities in Africa. These are the University of Cadi Ayyad (44th), the English-speaking University of Al Akhawayn in Ifrane (49th place). The historic University of Mohammed V in Rabat is ranked in the middle of the table, in the pitiful 56th place, while the University of Mohamed ben Abdallah in Fez brings up the rear of the Moroccan campuses featured in the Unirank ranking with the dismal 88th place.

As for private universities, except for Al Akhawayn, they are no better off. Thus, the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University of Benguerir is housed in 178th place, just a little before the International University of Rabat UIR, relegated to 186th place.

At the continental level, four countries place more than ten of their universities in the Top-100 of this ranking: South Africa, which has 19 campuses, has managed to position 8 of them in the top ten of the ranking. Egypt, with its confirmed Anglo-Saxon tradition, features 20 of its universities there, while Algeria has hoisted 14 university institutions.

The surprises of this ranking come to us from Nigeria and Kenya with respectively 10 universities and 7 universities among the Top-100 of Unirank.
