Moroccan Truckers Expose Massive Beach Sand Theft, Demand Crackdown on Illegal Trade
The union of owners and drivers of light and heavy trucks in the Tanger–Tétouan region, affiliated with the Moroccan Union of Labor, has denounced, in a complaint filed with the Wali of the region, the sand looting operations carried out in broad daylight on the beaches, calling for urgent intervention to put an end to these practices.
During a live broadcast on his official Facebook page, the general secretary of the union stated that the illegal looting of sand on the beaches between Tanger and Assilah, as well as the Houara beach and the surrounding areas of the region, generates heavy losses for professionals in the sector who suffer from unfair competition from smuggling networks, and threatens the livelihoods of thousands of families who depend on this activity.
These illegal practices are carried out day and night, in the absence of control by the competent authorities. The union suspects the complicity of the control elements with the beneficiaries of this illegal trade, stressing that the inaction of the competent authorities in the face of this situation is detrimental to the transport sector and the environmental and social balance of the region.
The union has asked the Wali of the Tanger–Tétouan–Al Hoceïma region to act urgently to put an end to this "continuous hemorrhage", by strengthening controls and imposing severe sanctions on offenders in order to protect professionals and preserve the environmental security of the region.
