Moroccan Travelers Quarantined at Border After Detour Through Mauritania Amid COVID-19 Travel Restrictions

Twelve Moroccans, caught off guard by the suspension of links between Morocco and Spain, tried to return to the kingdom by taking advantage of the still available flights, until last Monday, between Las Palmas (Canary Islands) and Nouadhibou (the northernmost city of Mauritania closest to Morocco).
Unlike the two Chileans and the Algerian, who came on the same flight and were placed in quarantine in a confinement site, not far from Nouadihou airport, the 12 Moroccans were taken to the El Guerguerat border post, about fifty kilometers from Nouadhibou, and entrusted to the Moroccan authorities.
At the Moroccan-Mauritanian border post, the only access route still open to enter Moroccan territory, the 12 people were placed in quarantine, in accordance with the current health measures.
With only one confirmed positive case, Mauritania does not intend to take any risks. In this regard, it has taken a series of measures to prevent the spread of the virus on its territory. It has even decided, since Tuesday, to no longer issue entry visas to its territory, from the city of Rosso, on the border with Senegal.
