Moroccan Town Breaks Ramadan Fast Early Due to Premature Call to Prayer

Thursday 21 May 2020, by Kamal

The inhabitants of the small town of [Martil], in northern Morocco, were misled last Wednesday by the muezzin of a mosque who was apparently too eager to break his fast.

The inhabitants of the town of Martil had to break their [Ramadan] fast 10 minutes earlier. The muezzin of a mosque would have launched the call to prayer earlier.

The inhabitants realized the gross error when they heard a second call to prayer, 10 minutes later. An unusual situation that forces the inhabitants to catch up on their fast.

In the opinion of Muslim scholars, the faithful who have broken their fast, outside the sunset period, are obliged to perform a make-up fast later.
