Moroccan Teachers Plan Nationwide Strike Over Unmet Demands

The most representative unions of education personnel have decided to observe a 48-hour strike on December 11 and 12. The reason is the non-satisfaction of their demands.

The Democratic Confederation of Labor (CDT), the General Union of Moroccan Workers (UGTM), the Democratic Labor Federation (FDT), the Moroccan Labor Union (UMT) and the National Federation of Education (FNE) have called for a national strike on Wednesday, December 11 and Thursday, December 12, according to the coordination in a statement.

On the agenda: organization of a demonstration in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of National Education on Wednesday, December 11, a protest hike in the streets leading to the Ministry and the Parliament, and a gathering in front of the hemicycle.

The call constitutes "the first act of the repertoire of collective action" to protest against the supervisory ministry which "persists in its indifference to the demands formulated", specifies the same source. It also recalled that the "days of mobilization" that it has "organized in different periods" have been to no avail.

This strike could continue until the beginning of next year, with another action on January 7, 2020, with vigils in front of the regional academies of education and training.

The unions also called on the supervisory ministry to engage in a responsible and urgent dialogue with them and to respond to all the proposals in their cyclical platform. They are demanding, among other things, a unified status for consultants and inspectors, and better living and working conditions.
