Moroccan Taxpayers to Foot $40 Million Bill for Lawmakers’ Extended Vacation

Starting next week, more than 515 parliamentarians (deputies and councilors) will be granted a two-month paid vacation. This rest period, offered twice a year, will end on the second Friday of April.
According to the data revealed by the Rue20 website, the biannual vacations of the two chambers of the Moroccan parliament cost around 80 million dirhams, of which 60 million in the form of allowances granted to the 395 elected members of the House of Representatives.
The remaining 20 million are distributed among the 120 councilors of the second chamber. In total, the parliamentary vacations granted during the legislative term cost around 400 million dirhams to taxpayers.
From February to April and from August to October, the representatives of the State are thus granted substantial allowances, without any counterpart other than the rare committee sessions, writes the same source.
