Moroccan Taxi Drivers Push for Fare Hikes in Tangier Amid Rising Costs

Several professional organizations representing second category taxi drivers (small taxis) in Tangier have officially requested the prefecture of the region for a revision of the current rates. This approach renews previous attempts that had not been successful.
The request formulated in this correspondence includes specific modifications. The professionals propose to change the basis for calculating the fare to 30 cents for every 100 meters traveled, instead of the current 120 meters. They also ask that the minimum fare for a ride be set at 7 dirhams, compared to 5 dirhams today. The request also includes the activation of a night rate, operating from 8:30 PM to 6:00 AM in winter and from 9:30 PM to 5:30 AM in summer.
The professionals justify these demands by the "difficult conditions" they face. They cite in particular the increase in the cost of living and prices of basic products, as well as additional expenses related to social security and the renewal of mandatory documents such as the professional card and the trust permit. The cost of fuel is also mentioned as a significant daily expense.
According to the drivers, the current rate is no longer adapted to the economic reality of Tangier. They claim that their proposals correspond to rates already applied in neighboring cities like Tetouan, without this posing a problem according to them. The professionals consider this element as an argument reinforcing the legitimacy of their request and insist on the urgency of a response from the concerned authorities.
