Moroccan Taxi Driver Jailed for Sexual Harassment Despite Victim Withdrawing Complaint

The court of first instance of Tétouan sentenced a taxi driver to two months in prison and a fine of 2,000 DH for sexually harassing a customer inside his vehicle.
Although the victim withdrew her complaint, the taxi driver was tried and convicted of sexual harassment, reports Press tetouan. This unusual situation is justified by one of the demands of the Moroccan feminist movement: trials for sexual harassment continue ex officio even if the victim withdraws her complaint.
A law punishing street harassment was adopted in September 2018. People who commit acts of sexual harassment against women are liable to sentences of up to six months in prison. The sentence is doubled if the perpetrator is the victim’s colleague.
