Moroccan-Style Fountain Unveiled in Brussels’ Molenbeek District, Honoring Cultural Ties
Sunday 28 May 2023, by
The Brussels municipality of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean paid tribute to its Moroccan community by inaugurating a traditional Moroccan-style public fountain. This fountain, made by artisans from Fez with traditional zellige, was specially shipped from Morocco and installed in the heart of the municipality thanks to the initiative of the associations "Akhbarona Aljalia" and "Espoirs et sourires", in collaboration with the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME) and the municipality.
This project aims to promote cultural exchanges between Morocco and Belgium, by honoring the Moroccan community which is particularly present in the Brussels region and in particular in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, say the promoters.
In his speech, Ambassador Mohamed Ameur welcomed this initiative which symbolizes communion, sharing and cultural exchange between Morocco and Belgium. He also stressed that the mosaics of the fountain reflect the diversity of Morocco, a country itself composed of a mosaic of cultures, religions, civilizations and natural landscapes.
The project aims to pay tribute to Moroccans established in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean and in Belgium in general, for their significant contribution to the development and progress of both their host country and their country of origin, he added. For her part, Mayor Catherine Moureaux hailed this initiative as a concrete example of the bonds of friendship and solidarity between Morocco and Belgium, and more particularly between Molenbeek-Saint-Jean and Morocco, highlighting the importance of the Moroccan community and its contribution to the municipality, as well as the beauty of this Moroccan craft work that fits perfectly into the urban landscape of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean.
