Moroccan Study: 57% of Domestic Violence Cases Involve Spousal Abuse

57% of the 17,000 cases of violence against women recorded annually in Morocco are attributed to the spouse, according to figures provided by the director of criminal affairs and reconciliation at the Ministry of Justice.
At a national forum organized in Guelmim on Saturday, March 7, on the theme "Towards the implementation of a life without violence for women and girls", Hicham Mellati specified that "a third of the complaints were filed against foreigners, not to mention the negligible responsibility of parents".
Except for the year 2013, when nearly 20,000 cases of violence were recorded, the figure of 17,000 cases of assault has been a national constant for more than 10 years, added the ministry official.
Organized on the occasion of International Women’s Day, the forum sought to highlight the discrepancy between the great development of the Moroccan penal and legislative system and the lack of social and psychological support policies.
