Moroccan Study: 80% of Diabetics Lack Proper Care During COVID-19 Lockdown

Fortunes are diverse for Moroccans during the confinement period. With the containment measures put in place by the health authorities, 80% of diabetics have suffered from the lack of appropriate medical follow-up, according to the endocrinologist and diabetologist, Hamdoun Lhassani.
The confinement in place for more than 3 months has impacted not only the economic and social sector but also the health of people with chronic diseases who must follow the treatment and medical control, said Dr. Lhassani, in an interview with MAP.
For the president of the Moroccan Society of Endocrinology, Diabetology and Nutrition (SMEDIAN), the patient, once the diagnosis is confirmed, must benefit from the treatment, follow a diet and practice sports. According to him, the ban on sports activities during confinement did not promote adequate treatment. Added to this is the non-compliance with the diet and the lack of medical follow-up.
During this critical period, several patients missed their check-up appointments, not only because of the health confinement but also out of fear of catching the virus by accessing hospitals, laboratories or medical offices. This situation resulted in the lack of appropriate medical follow-up for 80% of diabetics, according to SMEDIAN data.
With the easing of containment measures, the president of SMEDIAN has called on the Minister of Health to further raise awareness among diabetics and people suffering from chronic diseases on the need to go to these facilities which are now ready to welcome patients.
