Moroccan 'Sheep Hotels' Thrive as Eid Al-Adha Approaches

"Sheep hotels" are part of these small seasonal jobs that appear as the celebration of Eid Al-Adha approaches.

These "hotels" are intended to accommodate the sheep bought by Moroccans who have difficulty feeding them, caring for them until the day of the sacrifice. They are also popular for the other services they offer such as the sale of charcoal and animal feed, the cutting of the sheep’s meat, the collection and drying of skins.

These "hotels" have become a necessity for Moroccans who have little space or who care about the cleanliness of their homes. This is the case of Badr, a family man, who said he prefers to leave his sheep in the "sheep hotel" because of the small size of his apartment. "Before, when there was no such accommodation for sheep, I had to empty the space dedicated to the laundry room to put the sheep there," reports MAP.

As for Fatima, she has been using this type of service for four years, because the roof of their building is not so secure. "In addition to security, I no longer have to worry about cleaning up the waste, watching the food, or putting up with the smell of the sheep," she stressed.

Although ephemeral as a profession, it allows several young people to generate income that allows them to contribute to the needs of their family and cover certain expenses related to the celebration of the holiday.
