Moroccan Scholar Asma Lamrabet Renounces Veil, Cites Personal Conviction

In a post on her Facebook page, Asma Lamrabet, former Director of the Center for Women’s Studies in Islam, discussed the reasons behind her renunciation of wearing the veil.

"This will be my last post on this issue of the veil. I reiterate here [...] that this gesture is a gesture emanating from a deep conviction and that it has no connection with the diplomatic position of my husband," wrote Asma Lamrabet on her Facebook page.

She also took the opportunity to recall that she wore the veil, with pride and honor, as the wife of Youssef El Amrani, Ambassador of Morocco for 8 years, in many Latin American countries.

According to the former Director of the Center for Women’s Studies in Islam, this choice is in no way linked to the return of lively debates on the wearing of the veil in France, where she has decided to settle.

"I say it loud and clear: I find a certain French political system towards Islam in general and Muslim women in particular and veiled, totally unacceptable, racist or even abject," she declares.

She says she strongly supports Muslim women who wear the veil and suffer discrimination and rejection...

Author of the books, "Muslim Simply", "The Quran and Women" and "Islam and Women: The Burning Questions", Asma Lamrabet reiterates her commitment to defending freedom of choice and respect for this freedom.
