Moroccan AI Robot Joins UN Campaign Against Gender Violence

As part of the fight against violence against women and girls, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is joining forces with Shama, the first 100% Moroccan female robot, to launch the global campaign against this scourge.
For the 16 days of the global campaign against all forms of discrimination against women and girls, UNFPA is partnering with the Moroccan Cadi Ayyad University to leverage artificial intelligence. Thus, the female robot will participate in the launch of the campaign, through a mobilization video against violence, the UN agency said on its website.
The video was launched on UNFPA’s digital platforms on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. For the success of this global campaign, decision-makers, partners, opinion leaders and other personalities will be invited to join Shama, through the digital campaign #JoinSHAMA, in order to officially and with one voice express zero tolerance for violence and practices that destroy women and girls.
In Morocco, young girls are the most vulnerable to violence. Thus, in 2018, 32,104 requests for child marriage, 95% of which were girls, were filed. However, the majority of these requests were accepted, over 85% between 2011 and 2018.
