Moroccan PM Rejects Calls to Reform Penal Code on Abortion and Personal Freedoms

The Head of Government, Saâd Eddine El Othmani, is categorical. Referring to the position of his political party, the Party of Youth and Development (PJD), he rejects any modification of the articles of the Moroccan Penal Code, particularly those relating to consensual relations and abortion.
According to the daily Assabah, the Head of Government is accused of exploiting the campaign for electoral purposes, especially since several activists and politicians are currently calling for changes to the articles affecting individual freedoms.
Saâdeddine El Othmani specified that the subject has already been settled by King Mohammed VI, and that abortion has been authorized within a legal framework in line with national values.
He stated, "We are Muslims, and preserving religious values with civil means is part of our daily struggle," recalling that abortion will be allowed in cases of fetal malformations, danger to maternal health and rape, in all its forms.
The newspaper adds that the parliamentary session scheduled for the political return on October 11th will be an opportunity for major debates. The reform of these articles could come back on the table of the Legal and Legislative Commission.
