Moroccan Rapper Jailed for 2 Years Over Song Deemed Offensive to Royal Family

The court of first instance in Fez sentenced the author of the song "Kabi Hawaii" to two years in prison on Thursday, May 30, 2024, for insulting a legal organization and offending the Moroccan royal family, as well as for public indecency.

This judgment comes a month after the same sentence was handed down to the author of the song "Char Kabi Atay" for similar reasons.

The song "Kabi Hawaii", filmed in Fez and widely circulated on social media two months ago, had provoked strong indignation within the Moroccan public opinion, due to its content deemed offensive, in particular attacks against the royal family, and contrary to the moral values of the country.

The lyrics of the song, considered provocative and disrespectful, had been interpreted as an attack on Moroccan institutions and authorities.
