Moroccan Rapper Faces Trial for Controversial Song, Sparking Free Speech Debate

The trial of the author of the controversial song "Sir tkabbi Atay" (Go pour tea) by rapper Youss45 will open this Monday before the correctional chamber of the court of first instance in Fez. The artist, prosecuted while in custody for incitement to debauchery, is being held in the Bourkaiz prison.
This first hearing will be held remotely from a room in the Boukayz prison, due to the lack of evidence in the file and the failure to appoint a lawyer to defend the accused, who is being prosecuted solely on the basis of complaints from associations and individuals.
The accused, a man in his thirties, the father of a young child, is being prosecuted for inciting minors to prostitution or debauchery and inciting the commission of a crime or offense through an electronic medium. He was arrested last Thursday and placed in custody by the regional judicial police service of the Fez police prefecture.
The plaintiffs believe that the controversial song, which has recorded millions of views on social networks, contains offensive lyrics towards women and incites violence against them. For these reasons, they have asked the public prosecutor’s office to prosecute the authors of this song and to ensure the protection of minors against certain content on social networks.
