Moroccan Ramadan Traditions Adapt to COVID-19 Crisis, Egyptian Media Reports

The holy month of Ramadan is for Moroccans a real springboard to enhance their ancestral customs and traditions. This period full of symbolism is deeply distorted by the health crisis of the coronavirus.
In a special dossier devoted to the subject, the Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram notes that the month of fasting rhymes with abundance on the dining tables in Moroccan households. This period is linked to "a well-stocked table with all kinds of appetizing dishes and delicious pastries," the media specifies. Apart from the gastronomic aspect, the newspaper talks about the night of the 27th day of fasting which is a real event celebrated in the evening by Moroccan families in "a family and friendly atmosphere".
Without omitting the attachment of Moroccans to the values of solidarity and mutual aid towards the needy during this holy month, the dossier also evokes their attachment to traditional clothing. "Men and women are increasingly keen to wear traditional clothes and buy them for their children in order to encourage them to cling to Moroccan customs," the publication shares, noting that popular sales of these clothes are organized during the month of fasting and religious holidays.
Also, in Moroccan markets, notes Al Arham, merchants stock their stalls because, confident that the month of Ramadan coincides with good figures, a rare thing since the advent of Covid-19.
However, the Egyptian media laments that the current health context prevents Moroccans from going out to pray in mosques and sit in cafes and public squares as they had cultivated this habit for a long time.
