Moroccan Prison Authority Denies Torture Claims, Defends Inmate Treatment

The General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) says it is very surprised by the allegations and other lies, referring to torture and ill-treatment in several establishments in the country. The DGAPR refutes them and reassures of its commitment to respecting the rights of each prisoner.

Complaints have been filed for degrading treatment and laxity concerning the management of certain procedures in disagreement with the respect of human rights.

Thus, in response to the denunciations published on social networks, the DGAPR, in a clarification, explained that for the first case, it all started from a story of grocery vouchers. Indeed, the regulations in force regarding the management of grocery stores and canteens within prisons prohibit a detainee benefiting from purchase vouchers from making them available to other inmates. Unfortunately, some inmates of the local prison of Ras El Maa in Fez blatantly violate this established provision, exposing themselves to the consequences, it is specified.

While brushing aside the accusations made against it, the DGAPR reiterates its commitment to ensuring that prison staff treat prisoners properly in strict compliance with the law, it is affirmed.

Convinced of having always acted within the strict limits of its prerogatives, the DGAPR denounces the manipulation of public opinion and specifies that it will face with rigor any attempt aimed at slowing down the proper functioning of prisons.
