Moroccan Prince Criticizes PJD Party, Discusses Royal Relations in Interview

In an interview with France 24, Prince Moulay Hicham discussed many current issues and his relationship with his cousin, King Mohammed VI.
For Hicham Alaoui, the Islamist experience in Morocco differs from that of Tunisia. Unlike Ennahda, which was able to exercise power with a certain freedom, the PJD has suffered a "forced tutelage" preventing it from fully carrying out its reforms. A bitter observation that leads him to criticize the party’s support for the normalization of relations with Israel.
While the prince says he is in favor of reconciliation with the Moroccan Jews who left the country, he disapproves of cooperation with the current Israeli government. He condemns the policies towards the Palestinians, describing Israel’s attitude as "severely reprimanded and criticized".
Regarding his relationship with King Mohammed VI, Hicham Alaoui calls for respect for the royal function while reaffirming his freedom of speech. As a "free man", he wishes to contribute to the public debate in a "calm and responsible" manner.
The author of the book Islam and Democracy - How to Change the Face of the Arab World advocates for the evolution of the Moroccan monarchy. Inspired by the English and Spanish models, he calls for the creation of an "authentic Moroccan formula" guaranteeing the freedom of the people. Personal "convictions" that he intends to share and defend.
Attentive observer of the Tunisian political scene, he salutes the choice of Rached Ghannouchi, leader of Ennahda, to separate religion from politics in 2016. A courageous decision that, according to him, proves the "credibility" of the party.
Finally, the prince does not hesitate to describe Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed as an "authoritarian populist", comparing him to controversial figures like Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
