Moroccan Prime Minister Rejects Calls to Expand Abortion Rights

Monday 4 November 2019, by Sylvanus

Facing the bigwigs of his party, Saâd Eddine El Othmani, President of the Party of Justice and Development (PJD), reacted to the recommendation of the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) on the right to terminate unwanted pregnancies.

"His Majesty has made a decision on the subject. And the Moroccans have reached a consensus on this same subject. Some now wish to reset the counter to zero, which is not positive."

This is how Saâd Eddine El Othmani, President of the Party of Justice and Development (PJD), also Head of Government, expressed himself on the issue. For him, his party cannot give women a blank check to terminate unwanted pregnancies.

According to him, the PJD clings to its Islamic frame of reference and to what is believed to be right, before indicating that there is a national dialogue on individual freedoms and abortion.

The CNDH has, among other things, recommended "moving from the global concept of health to the criminalization of abortion, approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), which deals with biological and mental and social health." This recommendation is recorded in the memorandum it addressed to the two Houses of Parliament.
