Moroccan Ports See 6.4% Traffic Surge Despite Pandemic, Driven by Grain Imports

Despite the state of health emergency decreed by the Moroccan authorities, port traffic increased by 6.4% during the first five months of the year. A total of 39.6 million tons transited through the country’s ports.

This trend is the same as that recorded over the past five years with an average growth rate of around 4.2%. Regarding flows, the analysis of trade movements shows positive variations, both in imports and exports. As for imports that transited through the various ports managed by the ANP, 24.5 million tons were recorded, an increase of 6.4%.

This increase is driven by the positive development of cereals (+38%), coal (+9%), animal feed (+37.4%) and ammonia (+29%). As for exports, a volume of 13.8 million tons was recorded, an increase of 7.4%. For the ANP, this represents a strong rebound in fertilizer traffic (+52.2%) and raw phosphate (+8.8%).

In detail, the ports of Mohammedia, Casablanca and Jorf Lasfar handled the transit of 31.2 million tons, or 78.9% of the total traffic of the ports managed by the Agency. They are followed by the port of Casablanca, which saw a 3.4% increase in its traffic compared to 9.9% for the port of Jorf Lasfar. While an improvement in traffic is noted at the port of Agadir (13.6%) and Nador (+4.3%), a decline is noted with the port of Mohammedia whose traffic falls to 12% at the end of May. The same trend is observed at the port of Safi (-8%) and Laâyoune (-3.6%).

As for passenger and cruise activities, they have been prohibited in the ANP ports, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
