Moroccan Pop Star Summoned in ’Sahara Escobar’ Drug Trafficking Case

As part of the so-called "Escobar of the Sahara" case, the criminal chamber of the court of first instance at the Court of Appeal of Casablanca has issued a summons against the artist Latifa Raafat. The latter is called to testify as a witness.
This subpoena is motivated by the previous relationship that the singer had with El Hadj Ahmed Benbrahim, known as "the Malian". The latter is not only the main defendant in this case, but he also appears as a plaintiff and a key witness.
The investigation of this case is largely based on his accusations. "The Malian" alleges that several of the defendants, including Saïd Naciri, former president of the Wydad club, and Abdenbi Bioui, former president of the Oriental region, would have appropriated his property. He also accuses them of having set up money laundering operations through commercial companies serving as fronts.
These actions would be part of a criminal network specialized in international drug trafficking. The investigation, opened in December 2023, has so far led to the indictment of twenty-five people. The hearing of Latifa Raafat should, therefore, further publicize the case.
